Andy and Angela Kalmanash of Ruff-Wave have been involved with Portuguese Water Dogs in 1986. We are a AKC bronze Breeder of Merit. We started in Portuguese Water dogs purely due to our love for water sports, sailing etc. We are well known along the Long Island Sound for sailing with our dogs, and have had articles published about our adventures. We pride ourselves in being owner handlers, involved in all aspects of competition with our dogs, be it conformation, agility or obedience. Our dogs enjoy all sorts of water activities and actively compete for the helm of the boat. When you come visit us and our puppies, you will see dogs who have 4-5 generations under our roof. It is our philosophy that once our dogs retire from the confirmation ring that they are loved here for the remainder of their lives and start competing in other activities and venues. Our dogs are fully health tested for generations which is documented on www.ofa.org. All puppies are raised in our home in the midst of our daily activities, cared for, socialized, and handled. They are temperament tested, vaccinated, including kennel cough, have a CAER exam from a board certified ophthalmologist ( as do all of our dogs every year), have a vet health check up and are microchipped before they go home. PWDs are a curious energetic breed and are very active. PWDs are not for everyone, (they are like a 3 year old child.) Not everyone with allergies can tolerate a PWD. All of our puppies are sold with a spay-neuter contract Our concern is for the life of the puppies we produce. You will always be able to meet the pup’s mom at our home.
